Water Town Serenity: Tongli Day Tour with UNESCO Gardens, Boat Ride & Pingtan Teahouse
Overview
Highlights
What you'll do

Part I: Classic Water Town — Tuisi Garden & Wupeng Boat Cruise
Upon arriving in Tongli, enter from the north gate to visit Tuisi Garden (Retreat & Reflection Garden), the only UNESCO World Heritage garden situated inside an ancient water town. Its pavilions and galleries are built close to the water, creating an intimate, floating aesthetic. Afterward, board a traditional hand-rowed wooden Wupeng boat (awning boat). As the boatman gently sculls through the narrow canals, enjoy the rhythmic creak of the oars and view the whitewashed walls and black-tiled houses directly from the water.

Part II: Secret Alleys & Folk Pingtan at Nanyuan Teahouse
Disembark along the flagstone canal path and follow your guide into Chuanxin Alley, a narrow lane less than one meter wide that allows only one person to pass at a time. Continuing through the alley brings you to the historic Nanyuan Teahouse. Here, a canal-side table will be arranged for you. Sip hot tea while listening to local performers deliver traditional Pingtan (ballad singing in the melodic Suzhou dialect), stepping back into the rhythm of old China.

Part III: Heritage Homes & Gardens — Chongben Hall & Pearl Tower
In the afternoon, explore Chongben Hall and the expansive Pearl Tower Garden. At Chongben Hall, examine detailed wood carvings that depict traditional Ming and Qing dynasty wedding customs. At the Pearl Tower, discover artificial rockeries, garden ponds, waterfalls, and courtyards that frequently serve as filming locations for period dramas. There will also be free time arranged for you to enjoy local snacks, canal-side dining, or coffee at your leisure.

Part IV: Twilight Magic — Walking the Three Bridges & Return
As dusk approaches, Tongli enters its peaceful "blue hour"—red lanterns begin to glow, and the canals reflect the evening sky. Your guide will lead you through the traditional "Walk the Three Bridges" ritual (Taiping, Jili, and Changqing Bridges), learning about their auspicious symbolism for peace, prosperity, and good health. When your visit concludes, your private vehicle will take you comfortably back to your hotel in Shanghai or a designated city location.
